"This is alchemy, this is more than chemistry," says former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh about playing with his Friends. "I haven't experienced this since the peak of the Grateful Dead. And I wouldn't say that lightly." The band's newest lineup boasts a list of jam veterans: guitarists Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers Band) and Jimmy Herring (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Allman Brothers Band), drummer John Molo (Bruce Hornsby and The Range) and keyboardist Rob Barraco (Zen Tricksters). The new Friends, who have been together since last fall, are taking their first trip down South, playing new material along with covers of the Dead, Traffic, and Bob Dylan, "It's like surfing on a solar wind," Lesh says. "Somebody says a little idea, and someone else will take us into a whole other corner of the universe."
